Namati is movement builder dedicated to putting the power of the law in the hands of people. with a global network of over 2000 grassroots legal empowerment groups and communities. Omidyar Network will support Namati and a coalition of influential Kenyan grassroots organizations: Haki Center, Haki na Sheria, Nubian Rights Forum, and Paranet as they elevate the public discourse and shape public policy surrounding Kenya’s National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS or Huduma Namba).
This grant will support Namati’s efforts to eliminate exclusion and discrimination within Kenya’s emerging digital ID system, especially for populations potentially excluded due to religion, ethnicity, or statelessness. Namati will collaborate closely with Kenyan national and local authorities to ensure adequate safeguards and accountability measures are in place during the accelerated issuance of Huduma Namba as part of the government’s emergency response to COVID-19. Namati will use this grant to share what they have learned through their global legal empowerment network and with national and local authorities across East Africa as they look for opportunities to address securing citizenship rights.
