As a director for Omidyar Network’s Governance & Citizen Engagement initiative, Nishant leads the firm’s global strategy for investing in independent media.
Nishant was formerly the co-founder and chief operating officer of the Global Innovation Fund (GIF), a nonprofit social investment vehicle. In this role, Nishant led GIF’s investment process and chaired its investment committee for the fund’s first 30 investments, which included grants, convertible notes, equity instruments, and a social impact bond. He also headed GIF's venture support team, which was responsible for growing the impact and scale of the fund’s portfolio. Nishant personally lead on eight investments, including Segovia Technology and mClinica, where he sat on the board.
Prior to GIF, Nishant was on the founding team of the Monitor Inclusive Markets (MIM) group in India, which sought to drive scale among market-based solutions for poverty by providing advisory and hands-on management support. In this role, he worked directly with the CEOs of many social enterprises in India to help drive growth, including with India’s early entrants into the low-cost housing finance sector. Nishant also worked at the United Nations Development Programme in Zambia, where he developed new financing products for supply chains that engaged small businesses. He began his career by spending several years as a strategy consultant with Marakon Associates, and he sits on the board of Shivia, a multinational nonprofit that supports livelihood creation. He has written extensively on taking social innovations to scale and has been published in the Harvard Business Review.
Nishant holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a Master’s in aeronautical engineering and a B.A. in general engineering from Cambridge University.
