State of Aadhaar
As part of our investment in the Digital Identity Research Initiative, the inaugural State of Aadhaar Report has been published. The report, which has been prepared by IDInsight and sponsored by Omidyar Network, sets a baseline for knowledge on Aadhaar, the largest state-issued digital identity system in the world. With more than 1.15 billion people enrolled, Aadhaar represents a transformational moment in the way citizens, governments and businesses interact with each other. The scale of the system is staggering: each month, over 130 million Indians authenticate their identity using a paperless and real-time service. Since 2014, 44.7 million bank accounts have been created in minutes, and over 400 million individuals’ bank accounts are now linked to Aadhaar and were used by the Government to transfer nearly $3.3billion to beneficiaries last year.
A systematic, multi-disciplinary, and large-scale research effort is critical to build a meaningful understanding of whether, where, and how Aadhaar might advance the public good. The report aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Aadhaar’s technological and operational architecture, legal and governance framework, uses in financial inclusion and social protection, and emerging applications in other sectors.
