Connected Development Initiative (CODE) supports rural communities in Africa with advocacy and access to information on local government expenditures. Their “Follow the Money Nigeria” project addresses the lack of transparency and accountability regarding government spending at the local level. CODE’s work empowers communities to demand greater participation in the process.
Through a unique, citizen-driven model, CODE responds to direct requests from communities to help them scrutinize government funds for local initiatives, such as healthcare, education, and environmental programs. Their strategy uses both online campaigns and offline advocacy to engage stakeholders in dialogue and to ensure effective use of public funds.
Omidyar Network’s support will help CODE expand its capacity to accept greater numbers of requests, which in turn amplifies citizen engagement and drives better service delivery in the region.
