Based in Berlin, the Stiftung Neue Verantwortung (SNV) is a non-profit think tank that focuses on the issues of digitization, energy and resources, and the future governance. The foundation brings together experts from government, academia, non-profits, and business to assist stakeholders in making effective decisions that benefit the common good.
Omidyar Network’s grant allows SNV to convene privacy advocates and the open government community to develop a policy framework for public use of open data. As governments have collected and made available ever more data, its use by the media and civil society can create social value in innovative ways. Open data can spur new forms of civic engagement and accountability as well as new business ideas. In so doing, it will be important to explore the relation between open data and privacy.
Germany places a high priority on privacy, making SNV uniquely placed to convene discussions on the relation between open data, privacy, and surveillance. With its open data project, SNV seeks to inform policy development in democracies around the world through consensus building and thought leadership.
